Basics of Yoga: List

What is Yoga?

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word ’Ýuj’, which means ‘to join’. It is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices, which helps one attain harmony by joining the mind, body and soul. The benefits of yoga on health are aplenty and needs no mention. It goes beyond repairing one’s health and tries to help one connect with inner self. Sri B K S Iyengar aptly defines yoga as “an art, science and philosophy that enables every part of the human system to become attuned to its essence, the conscious seer within”.

History of yoga

Mention of yoga dates back to the Vedas, with special mention in several ancient scripts. There are evidences that yoga has been in practice in India for 2000 years. Ashtanga yoga also known as Classical Yoga, was brought to the fore by Sage Patanjali, consisting of 196 Sutras or aphorisms. Today several schools of yoga have sprung up based on the principles of Ashtanga yoga. Some are traditional while others are contemporary or modern, which include dance forms too.
